Through field measurements, models, sewing experiments, and architectural drawings, this project investigates how textiles can change the form and use of everyday objects. Our team developed Cheese, a removable soft textile installation for a steel dining table approximately 76 centimeters (30 inches) in diameter.
Inspired by the holes and rounded contours of Swiss cheese, the installation forms openings, pockets, and raised surfaces sized for plates, glasses, utensils, and bottles, extending above and below the tabletop. Dining objects nest within, lean against, or pass through the fabric. The contrast between the soft textile and steel table introduces new tactile and interactive qualities to familiar dining rituals.
